What is in a name?

I recently read an interesting article about names, particularly baby names. Can we as parents be harming our children with the names we pick? I hated my name growing up, I remember asking my parents if I could change it. Usually you'll find Carey spelled, Carrie, Keri or Kerry. I never could get anything personalized because they only offered the other spellings. And of course the fact no one ever spelled it right. Well, I have grown-up (just a little) and have accepted my name for what it is and have moved on.

But, I have to say, it is still in the back of my mind. When we went to name Jelly bean (well, her real name), Hubby insisted on a strong name - I wanted one that was feminine. And we did agree. We kept her name quiet the entire pregnancy, to avoid ridcule or looks, you know that stuff that gets under your skin. We chose a name that isn't really popular but is a classic, strong and feminine name. And still, after her birth - we heard plenty of comments..."Her name is so long, don't you think that will be hard for her to spell?" and "She is going to hate her name later in life."

Will she? Or will she be proud?

I think that your name can tell a lot about you...I think Jelly's name suits her personality perfectly. And plus, it could always be worse.

I hear ya. My name was spelled different too. But, I wasn't damaged by it. lol I am sure you were not either. I think it would have to be a pretty horrible name to traumatize a kid. I don't know what makes people think they have the right to comment on what we name our kiddos.

At least you weren't given two names!! I know Bug will hate her name for the same reasons you listed, Heck, whenever anyone sees her name before they see her they think she is a boy!! And that is why I will not compound the problem and cut her hair short like mine was growing up!! Anyway, it all builds character anyway and in this day and age she will end up at a therapist for one reason or another... probably for half of the stories I have shared about her... Snow Wipe?

My name was never one that was easy to find growing up but I love it now. My daughter's name is common but the spelling is not. LOL

Sheri - so true! I really think the name makes a personality.

MB- I think Bug will love her name! And if she does go through a phase like myself, she will get over it! Yes, another thing I won't do is cut Jelly's hair short, I had the horrible short "boy" hair cut as a child...ugghhh! LOL

Azmom - The great thing now, you can order things personalized to match the spelling of your child's name...unlike 10 years back! LOL

I used to wish my name were longer. One syllable just didn't seem like enough. The one thing I regret about my daughter's name is that I spelled Casandra with just one S. To me, it looks much better than Cassandra with two, but she runs into that same personalizing thing you do. On the other hand, she really goes by Cassie & a lot of stuff comes personalized that way.

Some of those celebrity names do seem nuts, others not all that bad. Fuschia is kind of strange, but then again there are plenty of flower names. And it IS a pretty flower.
